The type scale.
Font sizes may vary, but should be proportional and logical in there display. This is the hierarchy that reflects how the typeface moves through the core system, but should be adapted to context on the website, campaigns, and communications. The measurements shown are taken from the type as it renders at this width rather than quoted from the maximum.
Weight is not how hierarchy is made.
Size and tracking do that work. Negative tracking scales with size — −0.02em at 20px, −0.045em at 88px — and positive tracking appears on exactly one role: the uppercase micro label. Never on anything at body size or above.
Measure.
A line long enough to lose your place on the return sweep is the most common typographic failure, and it rarely looks like a mistake — it looks like an ordinary paragraph. Drag the handle past the cap to see the read get harder.
